Law Enforcement Cracks Down on Illegal Cryptocurrency Mining in Dagestan

As the new year began, Dagestan found itself at the forefront of a stringent crackdown on cryptocurrency mining following the introduction of a ban that took effect on January 1, 2025. This sweeping law, applicable across several Russian regions, is set to remain in force until March 31, 2031, with the primary aim of regulating the energy consumption associated with cryptocurrency mining operations.

What is Happening?

In a notable example of law enforcement’s commitment to upholding this ban, police recently uncovered an illegal crypto mining operation in the village of Khadzhalmakhi, located within the Levashi district. According to reports from Open Caucasus Media, this mining farm was operating with a staggering 89 machines that operated continuously, significantly straining the local power grid. Arsen Gadzhiev, the acting director of Dagenergo, highlighted the situation, stating that these unauthorized operations were causing notable disruptions to the power supply in the region.

The financial implications of these illicit activities are substantial, with losses estimated at "several million rubles." To give some perspective, three million rubles are equivalent to approximately $36,126. The frequency of such raids has increased, with law enforcement activities leading to the disconnection of internet services in various villages where illegal mining operations were suspected. This disruptive measure was done in collaboration with internet service providers and mobile network operators, demonstrating a collective effort to address this growing issue.

Why is This Important?

The impact of these illegal mining operations goes beyond just financial losses; they have serious implications for the broader community and environment. Gadzhiev reported alarming findings during a Telegram announcement, noting that energy consumption dropped by 3.2 megawatts after shutting down these operations. To put that in perspective, this amount of energy could supply power to approximately 1,500 homes, while there are only 849 households in the affected area. Such discrepancies indicate the significant strain illegal mining places on local infrastructure.

The problem of illegal mining in Dagestan is far from new. In January alone, authorities uncovered another operation involving 169 devices, while 2024 witnessed the seizure of over 30 mining farms, some of which were concealed within semi-trailers. TASS, the Russian state news agency, reported that 86 million kilowatts were stolen from the grid, which translated to a staggering cost of ₽350 million ($4.2 million).

Environmental concerns compound the issue. Cryptocurrency mining is notorious for its heavy energy consumption, contributing to a rise in greenhouse gas emissions. These emissions exacerbate the effects of climate change, creating a vicious cycle where increased global temperatures lead to greater energy demands for cooling solutions—many of which, unfortunately, rely on fossil fuels.
